Byford is a suburb on the south-eastern edge of Perth, Australia, originally founded as the townsite of Beenup in 1906. Beenup took its name from the railway siding there, a corruption of the Aboriginal name of nearby Beenyup Brook. In 1920, the name was changed to Byford and is believed to be descriptive. In 1977, Byford moved from the Shire of Armadale-Kelmscott (now the City of Armadale) to the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. Recently Byford has seen a rise in the number of residents due to a number of residential estates being developed. Historically Byford was constructed as a planned town to support workers for the State Brickworks located up the scarp. Rail reserves relating to the brickworks and depot are still visible. Pastoral land surrounding Byford initially supported sheep and then diversified to fruits, cattle, dairy and equine pursuits. These activities have diminished with the metropolitan area of Perth growing with housing demand.
